The Save Our Children Campaign: A Barrier Breaking Barrier

Barriers

Mutual Barriers

The barrier that Bryant wanted to overcome was the passing of the ordinance in Dade County. Not only was there a passing of ordinance to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in Dade County, there were also ordinances that passed in other states protecting LGBT. Bryant couldn’t stand the amount of support the LGBTQ+ community was receiving and wanted things to go back to the way they were before the passing of the ordinance. Heterosexuals, in big part, were the usual accepted people.

The idea of allowing homosexuals to roam freely and without prejudice was one that Bryant was strongly against. As a result, she began the Save Our Children Campaign, accompanied by her then husband, Bob Greene. The basis of the Save Our Children Campaign was one of Bryant's famous quotes.

“Homosexuals cannot reproduce, so they must recruit."

- Anita Bryant

Bryant's words were tediously chosen in a sly manner, making it easy for people to conclude what she wanted them to. The goal of the Save Our Children Campaign was to repeal the ordinance prohibiting discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and keep homosexuals away from "coming out of the closet", being openly homosexual.
